Like Bentota, Ambalangoda and many other small settlements, Gintota was a VOC guard post between Gale and Colombo. A group of Laskars, local soldiers in the service of the Company, was responsible for guarding the station and its immediate environs. In addition they served to carry all the news from Colombo to the next guard post.
