Gunung Api

Indonesia

The small island of Gunung Api is situated near the larger island of Neira. Gunung Api means 'Fire mountain' or volcano. After this volcano erupted in 1691, the supply of nutmeg and mace on Gunung Api, as well as on the neighbouring islands of Neira and Lonthor, declined drastically. This resulted in a substantial rise in the price of these spices, which were exclusive to Banda.
