Hila

Indonesia

The first Dutch fort on the island of Ambon, called 'Kasteel van Verre', was built close to Hila, in the village of Hatoenoekoe. The inhabitants of Hila helped the Dutch to build the fort, which was completed in 1600. They hoped that the Company would be able to offer resistance to the aggressive trading activities of the Portuguese. Later in the 17th century, the Company built 'Fort Amsterdam' in Hila.
