Manipay

Sri Lanka

Baldaeus, the Dutch preacher who headed the congregations of northern Ceylon between 1656 and 1665, regularly toured his parish. He described the people of Manipay as unfriendly with little enthusiasm for the Christian faith. In general the Company's clerical appointees were intended to ensure proper morals on merchant ships and at trading posts. In the first instance they were there to tend to the needs of the Company staff. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
