Map of the Kleijn Poolen Plantation

Jeekel, C.W. van / Bronsman, G.

Title Leupe: Plan van het om bij de fortress Sommelsdyk leggende land, geaugmenteert met een stuk land genoemt Kleyn Poolen..

The 1758 map with small inset map shows the location and extent of the Kleijn Poolen near Fort Sommelsdijck; see for comparison Naumann’s 1758 map (VEL1949) which is based on the same draft map as this one.

The map is largely a copy of the map of E. Bronsman, here used to show the results of the survey of the Kleijn Poolen plantation which turns out to measure 55 Surinamese acres (23,65 hectares).

In 1748 Sommelsdijck was abandoned as a first line of defence fortification, even though a small infantry detachment continued to be stationed there.

Scale of 50 Chains = 180 ‘strepen’.
