Map of the coast between Paramaribo and Cayenne

Wollant, Johann Friedrich Ferdinand

Wollant made this large map of the coast as far as Cayenne in 1783, on the basis of his ‘own observation’ noted during a journey to Cayenne almost a year earlier on the orders of Governor Bernard Texier, plus data which he had obtained from French informants on that occasion. His detailed report of it (Netherlands National Archives, 1.05.03 rec.nr. 376, appendix 739a) reveals that Wollant’s mission to the French colony, from 6 November 1781 to 22 January 1782, was to obtain arms and foodstuffs there, as their import from the motherland had been temporarily halted because of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War. Wollant was also expected to take measurements of the canonnière (gunboat) in the possession of Cayenne as such a craft was considered useful to the defence of Surinam (VEL2024-2025). In the end, it was decided to lend Suriname the vessel and Wollant took it with him on his return voyage. -North is below.
