Map of lots laying between Belgarde and the planned canal at the Leyde redoubt

Title Leupe: Kaart van de Plantagien, van Belgarde tot aan het geprojecteert Canaal by de redout Leyden.

This map shows several lots to the north of (bottom on the map) the Commewijne River and the Leyde redoubt.

The first land assignments in this area were made shortly before the middle of the eighteenth century.

The reclamation of the low-lying parts farther from the river began before c. 1757, starting along Warapa and Marapica Creeks, for which purpose however a system of drainage and supply channels had to be constructed.

This map shows one of these planned canals.

The depicted lots will benefit from the canal and all are designated.

The hinterlands of the lots are distinguished by a dotted line, on three hinterlands the note is made that the concession of these hinterlands had only been partially ratified by the resolution of the councilmen from 18 August 1730.

All pieces of land are measured and the most western (right on the map) ones contain their extent in Surinamese acres (0,43 hectares per acre).

De Leyde redoubt is included for orientation.
