Map of the mouth of the Amazon River

This map of the mouth of the Amazon Rivier from 1785 was possibly produced in preparation of van Keulen’s De nieuwe groote lichtende zee-fakkel which was released in 1790. But even before the release of this atlas, these maps left an impression. Two years after printing these Guyana maps, van Keulen was assigned as one of the three commisioners of martime cartography by the Dutch Admirality. Maps like these helped in attaining this posititon. The shown soundings on sea and the notations at the bottom of the map allow the reader to find a way through the mouth of the Amazon River. The mangroves and numerous islands did not make this survey an easy task and van Keulen succeeds in displaying the results accurately. Creeks and relief are equally shown accurately. -North is left.

Scale-bar of 11 German Miles = 222 ‘strepen’
