Map of the plantations of Groote and Kleine Dankbaarheid at the Berbice River

Cederkreutz, Christiaan T. Frederik

Title Leupe: Kaarte van een gedeelte der Rivier de Berbice, Oostzyde van de Plantagie Christina's Lust tot aan de Kreek Macaierore met den loop der Mannakole gronden enz.

This map shows the Groote and Kleine Dankbaarheid Plantations at the Berbice River.

The survey was requested by the owners, Governor J. Kaecks and Sir H. Volkmar from Amsterdam, to measure the distance between their plantations as well as the extent of their lands.

The measure posts used by the surveyor D.W.C. Hattinga in 1757 to survey this region are indicated with red dotted lines.

The surrounding forests and lands are indicated with letters and sometimes colours; see the index at the bottom left of the map.

The plantations Christina’s Lust, Juliannenborg and Het Plegt Ancker lie to the south of the Groote

and Kleine Dankbaarheid Plantations

The map was signed by the land surveyor on 17 October 1775.

The map is richly ornamented, with e.g. an image of a classical interior and an intricate cartouche.

Scale-bar of 500 Rhineland rods = 195 ‘strepen’.
