Robbeneiland

South Africa

Robben Island lies at the mouth of Cape Town's Table Bay. In the 17th century it was used by the VOC as a signalling post for approaching ships. There was also a military post. Robben Island also served to shelter from the wind those vessels lying at anchor in Table Bay. In the months of April to October, when the wind blew from the north-west, the area became extremely hazardous for shipping.
