The island Saint-Barthélemy was named by Columbus, after his brother Bartolomeo. Colonized by the French in 1648, it was then abandoned, ceded to the Knights Hospitaller, repurchased in 1665. In 1783 it was ceded to Sweden, and remaind a Swedish colony unitl 1878, when France repurchased it once more.
