View of the Chinese market, Passar Snees, at Batavia

Rach, Johannes

View of the Chinese market, Passar Snees at Batavia. Anno 2002 this neighbourhood is known as Pasar Senen, one of the most popular shopping centres in Jakarta. Rach's reference to 'Snees' in the title is a Dutch corruption of 'Chinese', while 'senen' stands for Monday, the day on which the market was held.

Depicted in the foreground is governor-general Van der Parra's carriage, on its way to the Weltevreden estate. -The broad road shown left was the main route to Buitenzorg, Bogor.
