Map of the Vollenhove Plantation at the Para Creek

Freuytenier, Jan / Meester, Roeland de

Title Leupe: Kaart van de Plantagie Vollenhove.

This survey of the Vollenhove plantation at the Para Creek was conducted on request of its owner, the widow of Johan Adams. The borderpost indicated with the letter A here (the one on the right side of the map) had previously been wrongly placed by the surveyor Roeland de Meester. As can be read in the annotation at the bottom of the map, the southern border of the plantation (right on the map) has been adjusted to correct this mistake. The extent of the parcel turns out to be 1285 Surinamese acres (c. 552,55 hectares). The terrain is characterized by forests, swamps, and a savanna. Trails and buildings are also drawn. To the north lays the Tapibo Plantation and to the east the Vrijheijt one. The map was signed on 13 March 1733.

North is upper left.

Scale-bar of 100 chains of 5 1/2 Rhineland rods = 150 ‘strepen’.
