Coastline profile of the Cape Agulhas

Jolinck, Heyndrick Dircxz.

On 31 July 1598 the Vriesland, part of the Second Expedition to the East Indies organised by the Oude Compagnie, passed the Cape Agulhas in located modern South Africa. The helmsman Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck drew these coastline profiles of the cape and surrounding lands. The top profile shows the cape when seen at 2,5 miles distances from the observer in northeast to northern direction. The second shows the cape when seen from about 3,5 miles in northeast direction. The final profile shows a continuation of the landscape portrayed in the previous panel where the letter ‘B’ is written.
