Lunar eclipse east of the Cape of Good Hope

Jolinck, Heyndrick Dircxz.

On 16 August 1598 the Vriesland, part of the Second Expedition (Tweede Schipvaart) to the East Indies organised by the Oude Compagnie, observed a lunar eclipse east of the Cape of Good Hope, which lasted for 2 hours and 25 minutes. Heyndrick Dirrecksen Jolinck drew the lunar eclipse, noting that the moon first turned black, then red and finally purple.
