The VOC built a wooden guard post in Ceith, a small village on the northwestern coast of the island of Ambon, in 1656. At the time there were plans to further reinforce the guard post and to construct a building of stone. The redoubt of Zondernaam, a half-hour's walk away, also fell under Ceith.
