Hormoz

Iran

With the aid of the English, the duke of shiraz drove the Portuguese out of their fortress on the island of Hormuz in 1622. Bandar Abbas subsequently took over as the principal staple market in the Gulf. The VOC debated at various intervals whether to occupy Hormuz in order to protect its shipping in the Gulf, but finally decided not to do so. Meanwhile, the Company continued to trade regularly with and at Hormuz. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
