Nusa Laut

Indonesia

The island of Nusalaut boasted two forts; one a small wooden blockade and the other Fort Beverwijk. The latter housed a garrison of 20 soldiers together with a sergeant and a doctor known as the 'wound healer'. In 1673 the sergeant was replaced by a senior merchant who reported to the supervisor or 'opperhoofd' on the nearby island of Manipa.
