Pattani

Thailand

Until around 1620, Pattani was possibly the VOC's most important trading centre in Asia. It lost this position when Governor-General Jan Pieterszoon Coen began concentrating the Company's trading activities in Batavia. Some time around 1622 the VOC abandoned its trading post in Pattani. Prior to that date its efforts to keep the local pepper trade out of the hands of the Chinese, its main competitors, had met with little success.
