Plan for closing the estuary of the Surinam river in times of war

Wollant, Johann Friedrich Ferdinand

Title Leupe: Generaal plan van defensie van den mond van de rivier Suriname en deszelfs environneerende situatien, banken en diepten van 't water.

This map shows the ‘Obstruction Plan’, the closure of the estuary of the Surinam River in time of war, which was worked out in detail during and after the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, using the set-up which was first improvised in 1781-1782. -The overview of the entire estuary by Johann Friedrich Ferdinand Wollant is the main map in his earlier mentioned 1781 general defence plan and series of military maps in cipher (VEL2077 and VEL2078).

It shows virtually the same arrangement of blockade ships and gunboats.

At some later time, with the exception of the soundings, the inscriptions in cipher were all given a translation. For a copy of this map without the original cipher but with the deciphers text, see VEL2007B.

Scale-bars of 200 Kettingen à 66 voet rhijnl / 1000 roeden à 12 voet rhijnl = [approximately 1 : 26,000].
