Title Leupe: Kaart van eenige landen, gelegen Kostgrond voor de Ed. Societeit. (Sociëteit van Suriname).

This is an anonymous cadastral map of the land of the Surinam Society north of Sommelsdijkse Creek, which was probably drawn in the 1770s in connection with plans to designate these estates as food gardens and pastures for the Society. In the description below right it is mentioned that plots (1) and (2) could be cultivated immediately, and that part of (2) should be set aside as pastureland. Plots (3) and (4) could be added to (1) and (2), with the note that (4) in particular was very suitable for pasture, ‘in the rains on the ridges and in the dry season on the lower grounds between the ridges’. These ridges consisting of ‘sand and shell’ or ‘Klip’ (rocky ground) have been dotted in. No steps were ever taken to carry out the project; the suburb of Zeelandia or Combé was constructed on the land designated (4) after 1796.

North is upper left.

Scale-bar of 150 chains of Rhineland feet = [approximately 1 : 13.200].
