Just as in the case of Purmerend, it quickly became apparent that Leiden, built according to the original design, was far too weak to offer any serious opposition to a naval attack on the mouth of the Surinam River. The provisional solution proposed by Abraham Dircks in 1766 or the beginning of 1767 to obviate the worst defects of the redoubt Leiden were the same as those suggested for Purmerend: filling in the superfluous moat, straightening a section of the ramparts to allow the placement of more guns and merging the inner and outer walls to create a single main wall. This map shows the situation as it was in 1766 and the projected alterations, which, according to the inscription on his general map on VEL1999, were made in November and December 1767.
