View of the market at Batavia

Rach, Johannes

View of the market at Batavia, situated on the west bank of the 'Groote Revier' (great river), the Ciliwung.

The artist stands next to the Hoenderpasar bridge. Its name -

'hoender' (fowl) -

refers to that part of the market. On the right the buildings where birds such as geese and ducks were sold can be seen.

In reality the number of salesmen and customers under the tamarind trees would have been far higher than shown here.
