View of the Diestpoort

Rach, Johannes

View of the Diestpoort see from the south.

To the right slaves bathe horses in the river. A bastion on a small island in the river in front of the gate was built to protect against a possible threat from the nearby Chinese quarter. The Chinese population was rounded up and concentrated here in 1740 in the aftermath of the Chinese uprising and the massacre that followed. The area between the walls and the Chinese quarter was purposely left unoccupied.

To the right of centre two imams take a stroll, accompanied by a slave boy bearing a parasol.
