View of the rear of Reinier de Klerk's residence near Batavia

Rach, Johannes

View of the rear of the governor general Reinier de Klerk's residence. De Klerk served as governor general from 1777 to 1780.

The house is located on the west side of 'de Molenvliet'; anno 2002 the house is in use as the Arsip Nasional of Indonesia, located on Jl. Gadja Mada III.

The garden has been landscaped in the French style which was popular at that time; slaves are shown trimming the hedges and watering the garden. It appears that De Klerk's household numbered some 200 slaves. De Klerk himself is also depicted, hand in hand with his adopted child.
