Map of Japan

Montanus, Arnoldus / Meurs, Jacob van

Map of Japan taken from the Atlas van der Hagen, Koninklijke Bibliotheek, The Hague Part 4.

This map of Japan shows the route from Osaka to Jedo. The chart is taken from a richly illustrated travel journal of a Dutch trade delegation to the emperor of Japan. The mapmaker was a preacher from Schellingwoude, Arnold Montanus, who recorded the experiences related by members of the expedition and subsequently had them published by Jacob van Meurs in Amsterdam in 1669.
