Map of Borselen Island

Kanne, Carl Christiaan

Title Leupe: Plan van het eiland Borselen.

This unsigned map can be attributed to the engineer Carl Christiaan Kanne with certainty, on the basis of its general style, the compass indicator and other features. It was apparently made during his posting in 1779 as inspector of Company buildings.

The plan reveals Kanne’s own project plan of 1779, which was much simpler and certainly cheaper than the one commissioned by Commander Van Schuylenburgh earlier.

The northern quarter of the island was set aside for military purposes and the northern point was earmarked for a battery.

A profile is shown on VEL1563B.

Also see VEL1562.

North is lower left.

Scale-bar of 50 Rhineland Rods = [approximately 1 : 2,080].
