Map of new parcels at Marshall Creek

Greenwald, S.

Title Leupe: Kaart van landen leggende in de Rivier Suriname, stuytende aan de Marchals Creeq.

This map provides an overview of the plantations upstream of the confluence of the Suriname River with the Marechals Creek, close to Weltevreden and Bergendal. It is made by the surveyor in connection with the assignment of new woodlands on the creek. The area became cultivated as a consequence and needed to be surveyed several times to cover all new parcels. This survey was conducted on request of Sir P. Stolting and Q.J. Berlon. It shows the land division in 1777 and notes down the extent of the plantations in Surinamese acres (1 acre = 0,43 hectares) and mentions the names of the owners. Sometimes the latter were difficult to trace. For instance, the land assigned to A. Aria and J. Nassij is merely 'being said' to belong to them. The map was signed on 31 May 1777.
