Map of the 1762 invasion of Martinique, sheet 1

Booth, William / Faden, William

Title Leupe: Plan of the Harbour, Fort, Town and environs of Fort Royal in Martinique.

This map hows the locations and battle lines of the British Army and Barbadoes Volunteers during the British assault on the island in January 1762. These troops besieged Fort Royal and took control of the island. It was returned to the French in the Treaty of Paris in 1763. Interestingly, the British troops captured Martinique again in 1694; the year after this map was published. Since Booth was a Lieutenant for the Royal Engineers, he might have been aware on this planned invasion and perhaps the map was made in connection with the preparations for it..

Scale-bar of 1760 yards of 1 British Miles = 18 ‘strepen’.
