Map of Batteries near the mouth of the Suriname and Commewijne rivers

This anonymous general map of the whole area of the estuary from Paramaribo downstream seems to date to 1755 when Purmerend had been completed and work on Leiden (D) had just begun. The wide inscription a little under the middle mentions that the woods as far as the sand ridge indicated had burnt down in 1752.

Besides the two redoubts, on both banks of the Commewijne in the vicinity of Fort Nieuw Amsterdam, parcels of land newly made available for assignation have been marked, and the same has been done on the western bank of the Surinam between Zeelandia and Purmerend.

Apparently the maker also proposed the latter as possible sites for extra batteries, given the ranges of cannon drawn in. These were never actually constructed.

Scale-bar of 300 Rhineland Chains = [approximately 1 : 54.000].
