Boela Comba, on Sulawesi's southern coast enjoyed the status of kingdom for many years during the VOC era. The area was thickly forested, but while these forests were good for hunting they produced little useful wood. During the west monsoon it was dangerous to enter the harbour at Boela Comba. The officials in charge of the settlement, the vice merchant and the resident, were housed in the VOC fort Carolina at the mouth of the Kalekongang River, together with the rest of the staff.
