Siau

Indonesia

Siau is the central island of the Sangir archipelago to the north of Sulawesi. The VOC had already established a presence here as early as 1616 when Siau was still a small and poor kingdom which enjoyed little trade. Alongside the stone fort of Doornenburg the Dutch built a smaller fort called Maetsuycker on the volcano. The Company maintained a presence in Siau right up until the mid-18th century, but Fort Doornenburg never numbered more than eight personnel.
