Terlucco

Indonesia

Terlucco was a VOC outpost on the east coast of the island of Ternate, just north of Malayo. In 1610 the VOC built a fort here known as Tolucco or Hollandia in a bid to prevent the Spanish from establishing a settlement here and thereby making the harbour unsafe. The fort was built of stone and slaked lime, and had an unusual layout that differed entirely from that of other fortifications built by the Dutch. It could be that the unusual construction was linked to the fort's location on the very point of a cliff.
