Taboecan lay on the east coast of the island of Sangir, which was also known as Sangi or Sangihe. The VOC constructed a lodge here, but this was never manned by more than around 11 people. Taboecan was one of the most important settlements on the island of Sangir, numbering around 800 households. The island was rich in good wood that was used both to build houses and ships. In addition the island was a rich source of coconut oil, used by the VOC in preparing food for the garrison and as lamp fuel.
