Kambelo

Indonesia

The village of Serikkembelo, once known as Cambello, had long been subject to the king of Ternate, who was in a state of war with the Spanish. In 1607 Admiral Matelieff agreed with this king that the VOC would protect him against the Spanish, in exchange for cloves from all the Molucca Islands. Cambello was one of the first locations at which the VOC was permitted to build a trading post and a fort, under the terms of a contract with the local ruler. Cambello was one of the most important sources of cloves.
