The Trindade and Martin Vaz Islands were discovered in 1502 by Portuguese navigators led by Estêvão da Gama, and, They were officially claimed by Portugal, but remained uninhabited. A Dutch expedition to the island in 1665 similarly found the islands to be too inhospitable for a settlement.
