Burhanpur

India

Burhanpur lay some 80 miles of Surat, on the coast of the Tapti River in the interior. It was a major trade centre where goods came together from various regions, such as Persia, Bengal, Kashmir, Gujarat and Decan. Consequently the VOC established a trading post here, but it soon ran into difficulties due to competition from the British, who had been trading in the region for some time. The VOC post was subsequently discontinued. The compilers of this database have not as yet come across a source in the literature that identifies this location as a VOC post.
