Around 1718 the company gained permission from the rajah of Cochin to build afor in Chowghat. However, his opponent, the rajah of Calicut, claimed the land and took the fort. Some years later William Bakker Jacobszoon recaptured the fort, after which it was known as 'Fort William' or 'Fort Wilhelmus'.
