Dabhol was an important trading port in the Islamic trade network in the Indian Ocean. In 1508, it, fell victim to a brute retaliation attack by the Portuguese following the Battle of Diu. All the same, the city was never colonized by either the Portuguese or the Dutch. It does regularly feature in early modern Dutch cartographic material.
