Map of the mouth of the Essequibo and Demerara rivers

Allier, M. / Roux, J.F.

Title Leupe: Kaart van de Monden der rivieren Essequebo en Demerary.

This map displays the mouth of the Essequibo and Demarara rivers. In addition to sand, clay, and mudbanks, soundings are noted. Navigating the branches of this river was challenging and more of these manuscript maps must have been produced throughout the eighteenth century, but only very few of them have been handed down to us. On land, some creeks and canals are drawn. The original version of this map was made by captain M. Allier in 1791, this concerns a copy from 1792.

North is lower right.

Scale-bar of 5000 Rods = 80 ‘strepen’.
