Map of the Dankbaarheyd Plantation

Hagen, J.H.

Title Leupe: Kaarte van de Plantagie de Dankbaarheyd aan Rio de Berbice enz. Van twee nieuwe gronden.

Map of the newly cultivated Dankbaarheyd Plantation belonging to Sir H. Volkmaar residing in Amsterdam and located to the west (to the right on the map) of the Berbice River.’

Judging from other maps of the area (VEL1599), the compass appears to point in the wrong direction.

This map serves to show the extent of the land added to the plantation.

Several forests with different kinds of wood lay near the river.

The plantation turns out to measure 500 Surinamese acres (that is 215 hectares), while the added land measures 1000 Surinamese acres (that is 430 hectares).

The map was signed on 17 October 1775.

Scale bar of 300 Rhineland rods = 150 ‘strepen’.
