Title Leupe: Course of the River Mississipi from the Balise to fort Chartres, taken on an expedition to the Illinois in the latter end of the year 1765.

This is one sheet of the map showing the trajectory of the Mississippi River running from the Balise to Fort Chartres. It was drafted by Lieutenant John Ross during an expedition to the Illinois late 1765. On his return to London he handed his sketches to the printer Robert Sayer, who combined them with French maps of the region to produce the result as shown here.

Scale-bar of 50 English miles = 85 ‘strepen’.
