The Orange Islands and the north side of Nova Zembla, 15 and 16 August 1596

Veer, Gerrit de

The image combines several events which took place on 15 and 16 August. In the background, we see how the ships are threatened by drifting ice at the Orange Islands on the 15th of August. In the foreground, we see how a number of crew members climbs a mountain on the Nova Zembla mainland to get an overview of the surroundings and the passage around Nova Zembla.

From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
