The ship lifted up by pack ice, August-September 1596

Veer, Gerrit de

The image combines various episodes from the first half of September 1596. In the foreground, the ship is lifted out of the water by pack ice, and it is harassed by polar bears. On the top right the two boats and the supplies are brought onto land. On the top left a great supply of driftwood is found, which would subsequently be used to build the so-called Safe House, in which the crew would spend the winter.

From the Wahrhafftige Relation, the German version of Gerrit de Veer’s journal, published in 1598. (See under ‘documentation’ for details.)
