Coastline profiles of the region east of the North Cape

Linschoten, Jan Huygen van / Doetechum, Joannes / Baptista à / van / Ketel, Gerard

Four coastline profiles showing various landmarks at and beyond the North Cape. Above, the North Cape itself as well as the Nordkinn, the peninsula just to its east. Beneath, various perspectives on the area around ‘Wardhuys’, i.e. Vardø, at the norteastermost point of present-day Norway. At the bottom, a profile of the island of ‘Kegor’, i.e. the Rybachy peninsula in Russia’s northwest. The ships passed these places on 20 and 21 June 1594.

From Jan Huygen van Linschoten’s Voyagie ofte Schipvaart, an account of the first and second expeditions Dutch fleets undertook along the north coast of present-day Russia in order to find a northeast passage to Asia.
