Bird's eye view of the settlement on Kildin

Linschoten, Jan Huygen van / Doetechum, Joannes / Baptista à / van / Ketel, Gerard

The settlement on Kildin, with the expedition ships anchored in front of it. Van Linschoten describes that this settlement was only inhabited during the summer months by a Finnish and Sami population, which caught fish from here during these months and sold them to Russian traders. Among other things, the image shows the huts woven out of wooden branches, stokfish drying on racks and a visiting Russian lodja vessel.

From Jan Huygen van Linschoten’s Voyagie ofte Schipvaart, an account of the first and second expeditions Dutch fleets undertook along the north coast of present-day Russia in order to find a northeast passage to Asia.
