Map of Myasnoy ('Staten') Island east of the Yugor Strait

Linschoten, Jan Huygen van / Doetechum, Joannes / Baptista à / van / Ketel, Gerard

The map shows the island of Myasnoi, called Staten Island by the expedition members, as seen from the north. On the Russian mainland (called Hollandia Nova here) a bay is depicted where two crew members were caught by a polar bear. On the coast of Myasnoi itself, various anchorages are depicted, as is the site where the crewmembers killed by the polar bear were buried.

From Jan Huygen van Linschoten’s Voyagie ofte Schipvaart, an account of the first and second expeditions Dutch fleets undertook along the north coast of present-day Russia in order to find a northeast passage to Asia.
