An Indian village near Goa

Doetecum, Joannes (I) van

The picture shows an Indian village near Goa. In the front, women can be seen bathing. Next to them are various animals: an oxen, a sheep and a pig. In the background we see a house and shop. On the right, men are taking water from a well, while the left shows two men who appear to be talking to each other. At the back, there are coconut palms. The Maritime Museum in Rotterdam suggests that this is likely the village of Bardes. The image depicts the ‘homes and living environment’ of the Canarim’, near Goa, where people made their living from palm trees. The texts under the image read: “Indian huts, manors and villages around Goa”.
