A Portuguese man on a palanquin

Doetecum, Joannes (I) van

On this image we see a Portuguese man of high status carried on a palanquin, while a servant holds an umbrella to protect him from the sun. In front of the carriage two dark-skinned men walk in Portuguese clothing. They are simply labeled “Negros” (Blacks). At the back are slaves (“Escravos”) carrying weapons.

The texts under the image read: “In this way those Portuguese who are of high descent and wealth let themselves be carried”
