A marriage in Ballagatte near Goa

Doetecum, Joannes (I) van

In this image we see a depiction of a marriage feast in the ‘land of Ballagate’, which likely refers to the Deccan sultanate of Bijapur from which Goa was conquered by the Portuguese. We see a parade of people, headed by musicians, accompanying the couple. The texts under the image reads: “Manner of marriage in the land of Ballagate that lies behind Goa”.
